Santa and his elves have a special place in their hearts for Sassy the turtle and her friends at The Spencer Foundation. So when Sassy asked them to stop at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital to spread a little early holiday cheer, they flew right in on August 3rd.
Together with Jeanine Spencer, they delivered over 300 items, including comfy clothes, art supplies and LEGO sets.
Joan Alpers, Director of Child Life, shared her thoughts. “Hospital stays are always stressful for kids, separated from family and friends and facing tests and needle pokes. Summer makes it worse, since they’re missing out on all the outdoor fun. Seeing Santa and his elves strolling through the floor and bringing gifts really perks them up. Many thanks to The Spencer Foundation and everyone who donated to make this happen!”
Our elves Gina and Jill spoke warmly about the experience. Gina said, “This day is something I look forward to. It’s heartbreaking and heartwarming all at the same time. It puts life in perspective. These kids have done more for me than I can ever do for them.” Jill added, “Today we realized how truly blessed we are in life and how blessed we are to have been given the opportunity to put a smile on someone elses’s face who is suffering.”
Jeanine Spencer gave her reflection on the day. “Today we created memories that children will remember forever. With the guidance of the Child Life staff, we delivered toys specifically selected for each child. Santa took the time to visit with them. Children, parents, staff all lit up when they saw Santa and his elves, especially on such a rainy day. Special thanks to John (our Santa) and Jill and Gina (our elves)! It was a wonderful day that we will all cherish.
“I reminisced with Michael Attard, one of the Child Life specialists, about how we met when I was a volunteer at the hospital over ten years ago. It’s been a wonderful partnership with the staff there, and our Foundation could not be more grateful the opportunity to make a difference for these children. And to all those who have donated over the years – we can’t say thank you enough. We could never have done this without your help.”
