When the Child Life staffers at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital needed more toys, games, craft supplies and gift cards for their patients in April, Sassy heeded the call. The Spencer Foundation and its friends purchased the necessary items from the Sassy’s Small Stuff wish list on Amazon, and Jeanine Spencer dropped them off to the hospital on Thursday April 28.
Jeanine shared her thoughts:
“I could not have been happier and more grateful by the outpouring of support The Spencer Foundation received from people donating money and supplies (toys and art & craft ) for the children at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital. These deliveries help to distract, occupy and help pass the time that a child spends in the hospital. When I delivered the supplies to the hospital the smiles that I saw on the staff made me happier than I can describe. The staff was so appreciative and thankful, because we made it possible for them to make the days of children in the hospital a little brighter.”
Said Director Joan Alpers:
“Every day we work with 50 or more kids and parents – assessing coping styles, needs, worries, reasons for hospitalization, what the child understands and what questions they might be afraid to ask, and what types of activity will help them cope, normalize their experience and distract from sometimes long wait times or discomfort. The things we get from The Spencer Foundation help these children and their parents navigate through very stressful times.”
