Santa usually takes a vacation in the tropics before his workshop ramps up production in the fall – but he never says no to Sassy!  On August 25th, they swept into Stony Brook Children’s Hospital with all sort of gifts, bringing some holiday joy in the height of summer.  Joan Alpers and the Child Life staff were co-conspirators, letting Santa’s crew know what was on the kids’ wish list.

Sassy and erstwhile elf Jeanine Spencer smuggled the gifts to the hospital in Jeanine’s car, since all agreed that Santa’s usual mode of transportation would give away the surprise.

(Definitely a tight fit)

Jeanine and Sassy rendezvoused with Santa and two of his elves (who sometimes masquerade as John Rollins, Jill Jacobson McGauvran and Gina Wuestmann) in the hospital lobby.

Sam and Sarah from Child Life led them up to the pediatric cancer care ward, where they were welcomed by the nurses.  The merry crew went from room to room, visiting with the children and their families.  The kids ranged in age from one week to 14 years.

Said Jeanine Spencer, “It was so fulfilling and heart warming to see the smiles from children and their families – parents, siblings and even grandparents – as we went from room to room.

“Thanks to the generosity of all those who donated or purchased items from the Amazon wish list, The Spencer Foundation delivered over 500 items this summer – things like toys, clothing, art and craft supplies and other fun and needed stuff.  And a very special thank you to Jill, John and Gina for making the day extra special by being present and bringing holiday cheer!”

And here they are – introducing Sassy’s helpers:  John and Jill
